Few views of Cairo from the 1830s and 1840s capture the scale of the Mosque of Sultan Hassan as sharply as this one, which looks across the Great Square of the Rumeyleh toward the mosque's towering walls. Built in the 1350s and 1360s under the Mamluk sultan an-Nasir Hasan, the mosque was among the largest and most ambitious religious structures in medieval Cairo. David Roberts sketched Egypt during his travels there in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into lithographs for the multivolume *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849.
