The print shows the interior of the mosque of Sultan al-Ghuri in Cairo, built by the Mamluk ruler Qansuh al-Ghuri in the early sixteenth century, shortly before the Ottoman conquest of Egypt. David Roberts sketched Cairo's monuments on the spot during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into colored lithographs for the multivolume *Egypt and Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849. European artists of the period were drawn to Mamluk-era buildings for their intricate stonework and decoration, and this view records that richness for readers who would never see the building themselves.
