Roberts's interior view takes the viewer inside a mosque used by the Metwalys, a Shia community in Egypt, rather than the grander Sunni monuments that dominate most of his Cairo scenes. He made his sketches on the spot during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839. The lithograph was prepared by Louis Haghe for the third volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London in parts between 1846 and 1849. Haghe's color work gives the plate much of its warmth and sense of the building's light and carved detail.
