Rising above the rooftops of Siout, the minaret of the city's principal mosque is the subject of this color lithograph, one of the Upper Egyptian views David Roberts recorded on his travels up the Nile. Roberts, a Scottish painter, sketched the scenes on the spot in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred them to stone for the three-volume *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849. For European readers of the period, plates like this offered a close look at Egyptian architecture that few could see in person.
