The Bab al-Nasr, or Gate of Victory, stands in Cairo beside the minaret of the Mosque of al-Hakim, two of the city's oldest surviving medieval landmarks. The gate was built in 1087 under the Fatimid vizier Badr al-Jamali, and the mosque dates to the reign of the caliph al-Hakim in the early eleventh century. David Roberts, the Scottish painter who traveled in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, sketched the scene on site, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into color lithographs for *Egypt and Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849.
