The minaret of the mosque El Rhamree stands alone in this plate, its tall, tapering shaft set against open sky rather than crowded by surrounding buildings. David Roberts sketched Egyptian monuments during his tour of the country in 1838 and 1839, recording their stonework and sunlight with a painter's attention. Louis Haghe then translated the drawing into a color lithograph for the third volume of *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. Plates like this one gave Victorian readers a vivid picture of Egypt's architecture long before most of them could travel there.
