This color lithograph shows the grand entrance to the mosque of Sultan Hasan in Cairo, a fourteenth-century Mamluk complex whose towering stone portal dwarfs the figures at its base. David Roberts made the original drawing during his journey through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred it to stone for the three-volume *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's views of Cairo's monuments helped shape European taste for Egyptian architecture, and this plate, with its carved and vaulted doorway, is a good example of his attention to scale and detail.
