The entrance shown here is one of the rock-cut tombs at Beni Hassan, on the east bank of the Nile in Middle Egypt, where provincial officials of the Middle Kingdom were buried in cliffs above the river. Roberts sketched the site during his travels in Egypt in the late 1830s, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into lithographs for the multi-volume *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London in the later 1840s. Such plates helped European readers see ancient monuments that few could reach in person, and the tomb facades, with their columns cut into living rock, remain among the most recognizable features of the site.
