Few sights in Nubia struck European travelers as much as the facade of the Great Temple at Abu Simbel, which David Roberts drew during his tour of Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839. Four seated colossi of Ramesses II are cut directly into the sandstone cliff above the Nile. Louis Haghe made this lithograph for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London in parts between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's views did much to fix the temple's image for British readers, and the monument was later moved block by block in the 1960s to escape the rising waters behind the Aswan High Dam.
