The inner sanctuary of the temple at Abu Simbel, drawn by David Roberts on November 9, 1838, is set deep inside the rock, where seated statues of the gods and the deified king sit in dim light from the entrance. Ramesses II had the temple cut into a cliff on the Nubian bank of the Nile. Roberts, a Scottish painter and Royal Academy member, sketched the scene on the spot, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into color lithographs for this part of *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849. The temple was later moved block by block in the 1960s to escape the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam.
