The temple at Tafa, in Nubia, was sketched by David Roberts on November 16, 1838, during the Nile journey that produced his large survey of Egypt and Nubia. This color lithograph was made by Louis Haghe from Roberts's on-the-spot drawing and issued in the published series, which appeared in London in parts between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's travel drawings were widely admired in Britain, and the series helped shape European images of the ancient monuments of the Nile valley. The print shows the ruins as a traveler of the 1830s actually saw them, before many of these sites were documented in later photographs.
