Roberts sketched this view of Wadi Maharraka, a valley site in Lower Nubia, on November 14, 1838, during the tour of Egypt and Nubia that produced some of the most widely circulated images of the region. Roberts, a Scottish painter who later became a Royal Academician, made his drawings on the spot, and the Belgian-born lithographer Louis Haghe transferred them to stone for the color plates of *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London in parts between 1846 and 1849. The finished prints were prized in Britain as a record of ancient monuments and desert landscapes that few European readers could visit in person.
