Drawn on the spot by David Roberts on November 9, 1838, this view looks into the inner hall of the rock temple at Abu Simbel in Nubia. Roberts, a Scottish painter, traveled through Egypt and Nubia in the late 1830s, recording the cliff-cut halls where colossal figures of Ramesses II stand against massive pillars. Louis Haghe transferred the sketch to stone for a color lithograph in the series *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. The prints gave Victorian readers a way to imagine ancient Egypt at a time when few could make the journey themselves.
