The temple at Esneh, a town on the Nile south of Luxor, is the subject of this view, which Roberts sketched on November 25, 1838, during the Egyptian tour that produced his best-known work. The hall shown is the surviving portico of a temple dedicated to the ram-headed god Khnum, and much of its carved stonework dates from the Roman period rather than the older pharaonic age. Louis Haghe's color lithograph appeared in part 24 of *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849, and plates like this gave European readers a sense of the scale and light of these ruins. Worth noticing are the heavy columns and the way the monument sat close to the town's buildings, a reminder of how ancient sites then stood among living communities.
