Roberts sketched this view of the Great Hall at Karnak, the hypostyle hall within the great temple complex of Amun near Thebes, on 28 November 1838, during his travels in Egypt and Nubia. The print comes from the published series *Egypt & Nubia*, issued in London in parts between 1846 and 1849, with the color lithographs made by Louis Haghe from Roberts's drawings. The forest of massive columns, many carved under pharaohs of the New Kingdom, conveyed the scale of ancient Egyptian architecture to Victorian readers who would never see it firsthand.
