Roberts sketched Karnak, the vast temple complex near Thebes on the Nile, on November 29, 1838, during his tour of Egypt and Nubia. Louis Haghe turned that sketch into this color lithograph, which F.G. Moon published in London in the later 1840s as part of the multi-volume *Egypt and Nubia*. Karnak's great hypostyle hall, with its rows of massive columns, drew European travelers and artists for generations, and Roberts's careful rendering of stone and light helped shape how Victorian readers pictured ancient Egypt.
