Philae, the island of temples dedicated to the goddess Isis, is the subject of this view, which David Roberts sketched on November 18, 1838, during his travels in Egypt and Nubia. Louis Haghe turned the drawing into a color lithograph for *Egypt & Nubia*, issued in parts in London by F.G. Moon between 1846 and 1849. Views like this helped shape the romantic image of ancient Egypt for European and American audiences. Later dam works submerged much of the island, and its temples were moved to nearby Agilkia Island in the 1970s.
