Esouan, the town now called Aswan, sits on the Nile at the first cataract, and this view takes in the island of Elephantine just offshore. David Roberts, the Scottish painter, made his drawings on the spot during his journey through Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for the multi-volume *Egypt & Nubia*. Elephantine was an ancient frontier town guarding the river route south, and Roberts's panorama shows how the granite outcrops and the water shaped its setting. This plate was issued in parts and appeared in the second volume, part 28.
