Karnak, the vast temple complex on the east bank of the Nile near modern Luxor, is the subject of this color lithograph from David Roberts's *Egypt and Nubia*. Roberts made his drawings on the spot during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into lithographs for the series, which London publisher F. G. Moon issued in parts between 1846 and 1849. Built over many centuries and dedicated largely to the god Amun, Karnak was among the most celebrated sights for nineteenth-century travelers, and Roberts's views did much to shape how Europeans pictured ancient Egypt.
