This plate stands out among Roberts's Nubian views because its title names its subject directly: enslaved people from Abyssinia resting at Korti, a stopping point on the Nile in what is now northern Sudan. Roberts sketched the region during his journey up the Nile in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred those drawings to stone for the large color lithographs issued in parts as *Egypt and Nubia* between 1846 and 1849. Along the Nile, the trade in people moving north from the Abyssinian and Sudanese interior was an established part of caravan life, so the scene offers a rare record of a practice that travel books of the period often left unmentioned.
