Few views of Nubia from this period capture a place as dramatically as Roberts's rendering of the fortress at Ibrim, set on a rocky height above the Nile. Roberts traveled up the river in 1838 and 1839, sketching temples, villages, and ruins that European audiences had rarely seen in detail. Louis Haghe turned those sketches into color lithographs for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London in parts between 1846 and 1849. The fortress's commanding position explains why it appears so often in travelers' accounts, and the print offers a record of the landscape before later dam construction reshaped the river valley.
