Roberts drew the ruins of this small Nubian temple on the spot during his journey up the Nile, when European travelers were just beginning to record the monuments of Lower Nubia in detail. The finished color lithograph was made by Louis Haghe, who turned many of Roberts's sketches into the large plates that made *Egypt & Nubia* popular in Britain. Published in parts between 1846 and 1849, the series helped define how the public pictured ancient Egypt and Nubia in the nineteenth century. The plate is worth noticing for its careful attention to the masonry and the desert setting, which show the temple as a ruin already emptied of its earlier life.
