Roberts drew the Temple of Dandour, a small sandstone sanctuary in Nubia, during his 1838 to 1839 journey through Egypt and the Sudan. The temple dates to the Roman period, when Augustus had it built in the decades around the turn of the first millennium BCE, and its gateway and courtyard still stood largely intact when Roberts saw them. Louis Haghe's lithograph turned his sketch into a color plate for the London series *Egypt & Nubia*, which helped define how European readers pictured these monuments. The temple was later moved to New York in the 1960s to escape the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam.
