Roberts drew this front elevation of the Great Temple at Abu Simbel in Nubia, the rock-cut sanctuary whose four colossal seated figures of Ramesses II gaze out over the Nile. The lithograph was prepared by Louis Haghe for *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London between 1846 and 1849, and it works as a frontispiece to the second volume. Roberts had toured Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and the faithful scale of his drawings helped European readers grasp the monuments' size. The temple was buried in sand for centuries until its rediscovery in the early 19th century. It was later relocated in the 1960s to protect it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
