Roberts drew this view of the temple at Amada, in Lower Nubia, which is among the oldest surviving temples in the region and dates to the New Kingdom, roughly the 15th century BCE. He made his sketches during his travels in Egypt and Nubia in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into lithographs for the multi-volume *Egypt & Nubia*. Published in parts between 1846 and 1849, the series helped define how Victorian audiences pictured the ancient monuments of the Nile, and this plate is a useful record of a site that many visitors would later see only in such prints.
