The subject here is the small Temple of Isis that rises on the roof of the great temple at Dendera in Upper Egypt, a detail that sets this view apart from the wider temple scenes in the series. David Roberts sketched Egypt during his tour in 1838 and 1839, and this lithograph reproduces one of those drawings in *Egypt & Nubia*, published in London in parts between 1846 and 1849 and printed by Louis Haghe. The rooftop shrine, built during the Ptolemaic and Roman era, shows how Egyptian builders added sacred spaces to existing temples. Roberts's work helped fuel European fascination with ancient Egypt in the mid-nineteenth century.
