Few views in this series show a building quite like the Typhonaeum, a small rooftop shrine on the great temple of Hathor at Dendera in Upper Egypt. Its Greek name links it to Typhon, the figure the Greeks associated with the Egyptian god Seth, and its purpose was still being debated by scholars when Roberts drew it. David Roberts made the original sketches during his travels in Egypt in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe transferred them into the color lithographs issued in parts for *Egypt & Nubia* later in the 1840s.
