Known to its Bedouin guides as El Khasne, the rock-cut facade shown here is the monument now most often called the Treasury at Petra, drawn as David Roberts saw it on March 7, 1839, during his journey through the Near East. Carved into rose-colored sandstone at the end of the narrow gorge called the Siq, its columned front looked startlingly grand to European eyes. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's sketch into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F. G. Moon between 1842 and 1845, which helped fix Petra's image in the Western imagination.
