Roberts made this view of the approach to Petra on March 10, 1839, during the travels in the Near East that supplied the drawings for his Holy Land series. Few Europeans had seen the rock-cut city by then, since the Swiss traveler Johann Ludwig Burckhardt had reached it only in 1812, and its Nabataean monuments were still largely unknown in Britain. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's sketch into a color lithograph for the series, which F.G. Moon published in London between 1842 and 1845. The print shows the narrow passage through the cliffs that leads toward the city, a view that shaped how Victorian audiences imagined the site.
