This print depicts a gathering of Arabs at Wady Musa, the valley leading to Petra, dated March 6, 1839. David Roberts made the original sketch during his travels in the region that year, and Louis Haghe turned it into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's views of Petra helped European readers picture a site that had only recently been brought to their attention, and this scene is notable for placing local people in the valley beneath the rock-cut tombs and facades.
