Roberts sketched this view of Petra on March 9, 1839, during the Scottish painter's journey through the Levant, and the lithograph shows the rose-red cliffs of the ancient Nabataean city stretching away toward the south. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's on-the-spot drawing into color stone lithography for *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, a multi-part series issued in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Few European artists had reached Petra by then, and the plates in this set helped define the city's dramatic image for Victorian readers. Notice how the carved façades and open valley sit within the scale of the surrounding rock.
