Roberts sketched Petra on March 10, 1839, during the long journey through Egypt, Sinai and the Levant that produced his famous Holy Land views, and this lithograph records the rock-cut city in the rose-colored sandstone gorge of southern Jordan. The print was made by Louis Haghe, who turned Roberts's drawings into color lithographs, and it appeared in the six-part series published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Petra had been largely unknown to Europeans until Johann Ludwig Burckhardt's rediscovery in 1812, so images like this one introduced its facades and tombs to a wide Victorian audience.
