Roberts sketched this triumphal arch at Petra on March 8, 1839, during the tour of the Near East that produced his views of the Holy Land, Syria, and Egypt. The rose-red city carved into the cliffs of southern Jordan had only recently drawn Western attention, after Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt reached it in 1812, so Roberts's images were among the first widely seen views of its monuments. Louis Haghe transferred the drawing to stone for this color lithograph, which F.G. Moon published in London as part of the series issued between 1842 and 1845.
