A Roman-era triumphal arch spans the ravine that leads into Petra, and David Roberts placed it at the center of this view. Roberts traveled in the Near East in 1839 and made the sketches that Louis Haghe turned into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. At the time, Petra was known to most European readers mainly through travelers' accounts, so Roberts's images helped shape how the rock city was imagined for decades afterward. The contrast between the carved stone and the towering cliffs is still the most striking feature of the scene.
