The facade of El Deir, the "Monastery," is carved straight into the rose-red cliff at Petra, and David Roberts sketched it on March 8, 1839, during his tour of the Near East. Louis Haghe turned the drawing into a color lithograph for the third volume of *The Holy Land*, issued in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. The tomb or temple dates to the Nabataean period, probably the first century, and its later name reflects monastic use long after it was built. Roberts's views gave European readers a detailed picture of a site that most knew only from travelers' accounts.
