Petra, the rock-cut city of the Nabataeans in what is now southern Jordan, is the subject here, shown as Roberts recorded it on March 8, 1839, during the Scottish painter's travels in the Near East. The lithograph was prepared by Louis Haghe from Roberts's on-the-spot sketches and published in London between 1842 and 1845 as part of The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia. Roberts's work helped European audiences see Petra at a time when few Western travelers had reached it, and the carved façades and tombs in the print reflect the broader nineteenth-century fascination with the ancient Middle East.
