Roberts drew this temple on Gebel Garabe, the rocky hill known today as Serabit el-Khadim in the Sinai Peninsula, on February 17, 1839. The sanctuary was dedicated to Hathor, the Egyptian goddess linked with turquoise, and it stood beside a mining site where Egyptian expeditions had gone for the blue stone for centuries. Louis Haghe later turned Roberts's sketch into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. The print records how these remote ruins appeared to European travelers at a time when such sites were only beginning to be described in detail.
