Roberts sketched this interior at the monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai in February 1839, when he was touring the Holy Land and Egypt, and the lithograph carries that date in its title. The chapel he drew belongs to one of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries in the world, founded in the sixth century under Byzantine emperor Justinian at the foot of the mountain traditionally identified as the biblical Sinai. Louis Haghe's color lithograph was issued by F.G. Moon in London as part of Roberts's multi-volume *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, published between 1842 and 1845, which made the monastery's interiors widely familiar to British readers.
