Roberts drew this encampment of the Aulad Sa'id, a Bedouin tribe, at the foot of Mount Sinai on February 18, 1839, during the Scottish painter's journey through Egypt, Sinai, and the Holy Land. The lithograph was printed in London between 1842 and 1845 as part of The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia, a multi-volume series that Louis Haghe rendered in color from Roberts's sketches. The plates gave European readers one of their first detailed looks at the landscape and daily life of the Sinai peninsula, and the tents and camels shown here reflect the nomadic world that travelers of the period depended on for guides and passage.
