Roberts sketched this view on February 17, 1839, during his journey through the Sinai peninsula, when the approach to Mount Sinai was reached through Wady Barah, the dry valley that winds through the granite mountains. The lithograph was prepared by Louis Haghe from Roberts's on-the-spot drawing and issued in the London series The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia, published by F. G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Roberts, a Scottish painter, traveled the region in the late 1830s, and his views of biblical sites in full color helped define how European audiences pictured the Near East. The print is a useful record of the landscape as a Victorian traveler saw it.
