Few places in the Holy Land are as isolated as the fortified walls of St. Catherine's Monastery, which David Roberts drew from the mountain itself in February 1839. The view looks out over the plain below, which tradition identifies as the encampment of the Israelites. Louis Haghe lithographed the drawing in color for Roberts's *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, issued in London by F. G. Moon in parts between 1842 and 1845. The sixth-century monastery, built near the site traditionally linked to the Burning Bush, was among the most visited Christian sites in the region, and Roberts's sketch preserves its enclosed, almost citadel-like appearance at a time when European travelers were only beginning to reach it in numbers.
