Roberts dated this view to May 5, 1839, when he sketched the lesser temple at Baalbek with the peaks of Mount Lebanon rising behind it. The Roman city sits in the Beqaa Valley of present-day Lebanon, and its monumental temples were among the most striking ruins Western travelers encountered in the Levant. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's drawing into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, a multivolume series published in London in the early 1840s. The series gave European readers a detailed picture of sites they would rarely see in person, and this plate shows how the ancient stonework stood against the open landscape.
