Baalbek, the Roman-era temple complex in the Bekaa Valley of present-day Lebanon, is the subject of this view, which David Roberts sketched on May 7, 1839. Roberts, a Scottish painter and Royal Academician, toured the Levant and Egypt in those years and recorded ruins that European audiences had seen little of. The lithograph was made by Louis Haghe from Roberts's drawing and issued in parts as *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia* between 1842 and 1845. Its tall, weathered columns of the great temple court show why the site fascinated nineteenth-century travelers.
