Baalbek, the Roman temple complex in the Bekaa Valley of present-day Lebanon, is the subject here, shown as David Roberts saw it on May 4, 1839, during his tour of the Levant. Roberts sketched the ruins on the spot, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into color lithographs for The Holy Land, published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. The plate is a record of a site that European travelers of the period prized for its monumental columns and temple façades, and it reflects the wider nineteenth-century fascination with the ancient Near East.
