Roberts chose the small circular temple at Baalbek, the ancient Heliopolis in what is now Lebanon, rather than the larger ruins nearby. He sketched it on May 7, 1839, during the Near East tour that supplied the drawings for his Holy Land series. Louis Haghe turned those sketches into this color lithograph, published in London between 1842 and 1845. The rounded colonnade and its setting show how European audiences first came to know the Roman monuments of Baalbek through prints like this one.
