Roberts dated this view of Baalbek to May 7, 1839, and it was taken from a spot near the fountain, looking across the ruins of the great Roman sanctuary in the Lebanese town. Known in antiquity as Heliopolis, the city was rarely reached by European travelers at the time, and Roberts's views of its temples found a wide audience in print. Louis Haghe turned the drawings into color lithographs for *The Holy Land*, which the London publisher F.G. Moon issued in parts from 1842 to 1845. The prints helped shape how Victorian readers pictured the classical East.
