Beit Jebrin, the ruined town in the Judean lowlands that David Roberts drew on March 7, 1839, sits here as a crumbling Crusader-era shell rather than a living settlement. Roberts made his sketches during the tour of Egypt, Nubia and the Holy Land that produced his famous series, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for London publication between 1842 and 1845. The plate was issued in the second volume of The Holy Land, a work that gave Victorian readers a wide audience for biblical sites they would likely never see in person.
