Drawn on the spot on March 29, 1839, this view shows the Church of St George at Lydda, the town now called Lod, where tradition holds that the soldier-saint George was buried. David Roberts made the sketch during his journey through the Near East in the late 1830s, and Louis Haghe turned it into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, issued in parts by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's record of the stone church and the modest town around it is valued as a view of the region before the large changes of later decades.
