Joppa, the old port that now forms part of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, is the subject here, drawn by David Roberts on April 16, 1839, during his tour of the Levant. The scene carries the weight of the town's biblical associations, since Joppa appears in the stories of Jonah and of the cedar timber shipped there for Solomon's Temple. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's sketch into a color lithograph, and it was issued by F.G. Moon in the second volume of *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia* between 1842 and 1845. Such prints made the Holy Land visible to British readers who could not travel there themselves.
