Roberts sketched Tyre, the ancient Phoenician port on the Lebanese coast, on April 27, 1839, during the tour that produced his Holy Land drawings. Louis Haghe turned the sketch into a color lithograph for the second volume of F.G. Moon's Holy Land series, published between 1842 and 1845. Travelers of the period came to Tyre with its biblical and classical past in mind, and Alexander the Great's siege of the city in 332 BC, when he built a causeway to the offshore island, shows how old the site already was.
